A quick guide to what happens at your initial appointment and how to get the most from it.
Before you arrive
Forms: Complete new‑patient forms online (or arrive 15 minutes early to complete in clinic).
Records: If possible, send prior GI records, imaging, labs, and procedure reports in advance or bring copies.
Medications: Bring a current list (name, dose, frequency) including over‑the‑counter meds and supplements.
Referrals/authorizations: If your plan requires one, please confirm it’s active before your visit.
Fasting:Only fast if we asked you to for specific labs or tests; otherwise eat/drink normally.
Transportation: Only needed if we scheduled a sedated procedure the same day (rare for first visits).
Day‑of checklist

When you arrive (0–15 minutes)
Check‑in: Front desk verifies ID, insurance, and forms; collects copay and any required consents.
Vitals: Nursing team records blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height/weight.
Nurse intake (10–15 minutes)
Review of your symptoms, history, medications, allergies, and risk factors.
Confirmation of outside records received; we’ll request any missing items with your permission.
Clinician visit (15–30 minutes)
Focused history & physical exam by a GI provider.
Discussion: We explain likely causes, next steps, and answer your questions in plain language.
Plan: May include labs, stool tests, imaging, medications, nutrition guidance, and/or procedures (e.g., colonoscopy, EGD). We tailor the plan to you.
Tip: Tell us what success looks like for you (e.g., pain relief, fewer flares, screening). It helps align the plan with your goals.
Tests and procedures
Same‑day testing: Some labs or stool kits may be ordered at your first visit. Imaging and procedures are usually scheduled for a future date.
Sedated procedures: We’ll review fasting instructions, driver requirements, prep, and medication adjustments. You’ll receive written prep instructions and a point of contact for questions.
Medications & refills
We review current treatments and discuss risks/benefits.
If new prescriptions are needed, we send them electronically to your preferred pharmacy.
For chronic therapies (e.g., biologics), we coordinate prior authorization and teach injection/infusion logistics as needed.
Billing & insurance basics
Copays/deductibles/co‑insurance are collected per your plan.
We verify coverage and seek prior authorization when required. Some authorizations take 5–10 business daysdepending on the plan.
You’ll receive a detailed estimate for procedures upon scheduling; final charges depend on the services performed and your benefits.
Communication & the patient portal
Use our secure patient portal to view results, message the care team, request refills, and see after‑visit summaries.
We typically release most lab/imaging results as soon as we receive them, followed by a clinician explanation.
Privacy & chaperones
You’re entitled to a medical chaperone for any sensitive exam—just ask.
We follow HIPAA privacy standards; tell us who may receive information about your care.
Special situations
Blood thinners: Do not stop without guidance; we’ll coordinate with your prescriber before any procedures.
Diabetes/GLP‑1 medications: We’ll give clear fasting and day‑of instructions if a procedure is planned.
Pregnancy: Please tell us—some tests are deferred or modified.
Minors: A parent/guardian must attend and consent.
After your visit
You’ll leave with an after‑visit summary outlining your diagnosis (or working diagnosis), ordered tests, medications, and next steps.
Our team will schedule follow‑ups/procedures and contact you with any authorizations or prep details.
Call us right away if you experience worsening pain, bleeding, persistent vomiting, fever >101°F, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
