Colonoscopy
Your Key to Digestive Health
A colonoscopy is a vital preventative procedure that allows our gastroenterologists to examine the lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum. It's the most effective way to detect and prevent colorectal cancer by identifying and removing polyps before they become cancerous. This comprehensive examination helps diagnose a range of digestive issues, from inflammatory bowel disease to unexplained changes in bowel habits, ensuring early intervention and peace of mind.
Who Needs a Colonoscopy and When?
Understanding the recommended screening guidelines is crucial for proactive health management. Our team will help you determine the right schedule for your colonoscopy based on your age, family history, and personal risk factors.
1
Standard Screening
Generally recommended for individuals aged 45 and older with no symptoms or family history of colorectal cancer.
2
Family History
If a close relative (parent, sibling, child) had colorectal cancer or polyps, screening may begin 10 years prior to their diagnosis age or at age 40, whichever is earlier.
3
Symptoms
A colonoscopy may be necessary at any age if you experience symptoms like unexplained abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, persistent changes in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss.
4
High-Risk Conditions
Individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's or ulcerative colitis) or certain genetic syndromes may require earlier and more frequent screenings.
What to Expect: The Procedure Day
Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. Here's a brief overview of what happens during your colonoscopy appointment:
01
Arrival & Registration
You'll check in, complete any necessary paperwork, and prepare for your procedure in a private pre-procedure area.
02
Sedation
An anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist will administer sedation to ensure you are comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure.
03
The Examination
Our gastroenterologist will gently insert a thin, flexible tube with a camera (colonoscope) into your rectum and guide it through your colon, examining the lining for abnormalities. Polyps found will be removed.
04
Recovery
After the procedure, you'll rest in a recovery area while the sedation wears off. Our team will monitor you and provide post-procedure instructions.
Preparation and Recovery
Proper preparation is key to a successful colonoscopy. Our detailed instructions ensure your colon is clean for a clear view, and we provide comprehensive guidance for a smooth recovery.
  • Specific dietary restrictions for days leading up to the procedure.
  • Detailed instructions for bowel cleansing solutions and timing.
  • List of medications to avoid or adjust.
  • Tips for staying hydrated and comfortable.
  • What to expect immediately after sedation.
  • Dietary recommendations for your first meal.
  • Activity restrictions for the rest of the day.
  • When to expect your results and follow-up care.
Benefits & Risks
While a colonoscopy is extremely safe and effective, it's important to be aware of both its significant advantages and potential, albeit rare, risks.
Significant Benefits
  • The gold standard for colorectal cancer prevention and early detection.
  • Allows for the immediate removal of polyps during the procedure, preventing future cancer.
  • Provides accurate diagnosis for various gastrointestinal conditions, guiding effective treatment.
  • Offers peace of mind with thorough examination of the entire colon.
Potential Risks
  • Possible, but rare, perforation (tear) in the colon wall.
  • Minor bleeding, especially after polyp removal.
  • Adverse reactions to sedation.
  • Very rarely, incomplete examination due to poor bowel prep.
Insurance Coverage
Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover screening colonoscopies. Coverage details can vary based on your plan and individual risk factors. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm your benefits. Our billing department is also available to help answer your questions.

Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
Examining the Upper Digestive Tract
An Upper Endoscopy, also known as Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a common and highly effective procedure used to examine the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum). Using a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera, our specialists can visualize these areas, identify abnormalities, take biopsies, and even perform therapeutic interventions, providing crucial insights into your digestive health.
When is an EGD Recommended?
An EGD is a valuable diagnostic tool for evaluating a variety of upper digestive symptoms and conditions. Your doctor may recommend this procedure if you experience:
1
Persistent GERD
Chronic heartburn, acid reflux, or difficulty managing symptoms with medication.
2
Difficulty Swallowing
Known as dysphagia, indicating a possible narrowing or obstruction in the esophagus.
3
Upper Abdominal Pain
Unexplained or severe pain in the stomach or chest area, often accompanied by bloating.
4
Chronic Nausea/Vomiting
Persistent episodes of nausea and vomiting without an identifiable cause.
5
Suspected Ulcers
Evaluation for gastric or duodenal ulcers, especially if bleeding is suspected.
6
Barrett's Esophagus Screening
Monitoring for precancerous changes in the esophageal lining, particularly in those with long-standing GERD.
What to Expect: The Procedure Day
We strive to make your EGD experience as comfortable and seamless as possible. Here’s a general overview of the process:
01
Arrival & Preparation
You'll check in, complete necessary forms, and be escorted to a private area where a nurse will discuss your medical history and prepare you for the procedure.
02
Sedation
A mild sedative will be administered intravenously to help you relax and feel comfortable throughout the procedure. You will likely be lightly asleep and remember very little.
03
The Examination
Our gastroenterologist will gently insert the endoscope into your mouth, down the esophagus, into the stomach, and then into the duodenum, carefully examining the lining. Biopsies may be taken if needed.
04
Recovery
After the EGD, you'll rest in a recovery area while the sedative wears off. Our team will monitor your vital signs and provide post-procedure instructions before you are discharged.
Conditions Diagnosed by EGD
An EGD can help diagnose a wide range of conditions affecting the upper GI tract, allowing for targeted and effective treatment plans.
Ulcers & Inflammation
  • Gastric and duodenal ulcers
  • Esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus)
  • Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining)
Barrett's Esophagus
Precancerous changes in the esophageal lining, often a complication of chronic GERD, requiring surveillance.
Strictures & Obstructions
Narrowing of the esophagus or other blockages that can cause difficulty swallowing.
Celiac Disease
Biopsies of the small intestine can confirm this autoimmune condition.
Polyps & Tumors
Detection of both benign and malignant growths in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum.
Preparation and Recovery
Careful preparation is essential for a clear and successful EGD. We'll provide detailed instructions, and our team will guide you through a smooth recovery process.
  • Fasting requirements (typically 6-8 hours before the procedure).
  • Instructions on adjusting or temporarily stopping certain medications (e.g., blood thinners).
  • Arranging for a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure.
  • What to expect immediately after the sedative, including mild throat soreness.
  • Dietary recommendations for the rest of the day.
  • Avoiding driving or operating machinery for 24 hours.
  • Information on when and how you will receive your results.
Benefits & Risks
An EGD is a safe and highly effective diagnostic tool, but like all medical procedures, it carries some minimal risks that our team will discuss with you.
Key Benefits
  • Accurate Diagnosis: Provides direct visualization and biopsy capabilities for precise diagnosis.
  • Therapeutic Potential: Allows for treatment during the procedure, such as polyp removal, dilation of strictures, or stopping bleeding.
  • Minimally Invasive: A quick, outpatient procedure with minimal discomfort thanks to sedation.
  • Early Detection: Essential for identifying conditions like Barrett's Esophagus or early-stage cancers.
Potential, Rare Risks
  • Perforation: A rare tear in the lining of the upper GI tract.
  • Bleeding: Especially after a biopsy or polyp removal, usually minor and self-limiting.
  • Reaction to Sedation: Though rare, adverse reactions to anesthetic can occur.
  • Sore Throat: Mild and temporary soreness is common after the procedure.
Insurance Coverage
Most insurance plans cover diagnostic EGD procedures when medically necessary. Coverage details can vary based on your specific plan and the reason for the procedure. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to understand your benefits. Our billing department is also available to assist with any questions you may have.
